Building Energy Efficiency | Creating the “Bird’s Nest” Energy-Efficient Firewall

2025-03-30 Track Record

The National Stadium (“Bird’s Nest”), located in the southern part of Beijing Olympic Park Central Area, served as the main stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Covering 204,000 square meters (20.4 hectares) with a floor area of 258,000 square meters, it accommodates 91,000 spectators. As a landmark sports venue and Olympic legacy, the “Bird’s Nest” is hailed as a masterpiece of “fourth-generation stadium” architecture.

“Green Olympics” was one of the three core concepts of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Consequently, all building materials used in the Bird’s Nest’s construction had to meet stringent energy-saving and environmental requirements, aligning with the national standard of 65% overall building energy efficiency. Under this framework, Wanhua Polyurethane On-Site Spray Foam was selected for the insulation of the stadium’s podium base. This material not only delivers exceptional thermal insulation but also utilizes an eco-friendly blowing agent that poses no harm to the atmospheric ozone layer. Rated as B1-grade fire-resistant material, it combines excellent flame retardancy with high compressive strength and dimensional stability.

Polyurethane spray foam features rapid on-site curing and strong self-adhesion, allowing direct application to exterior walls without constraints from irregular geometries, making it suitable for diverse building insulation projects. Its full adhesion to the substrate ensures superior insulation integrity and system reliability. Beyond the Bird’s Nest’s podium insulation, Wanhua’s polyurethane rigid foam spray was also applied to the roof insulation of the Olympic Park Underground Leisure Center.

Wanhua Energysav Group has consistently prioritized social responsibility. By supplying high-performance polyurethane insulation materials for the Bird’s Nest, the company contributed to both the stadium’s construction and the success of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, exemplifying its commitment to quality craftsmanship and sustainable innovation.
